Project Two - Social Justice
Following the brief, I wanted to home in on Street Harassment as part of my assigned social issue of ‘Body Autonomy’, with heavy influence from Stop Street Harassment NI.
To visually represent this issue, I created a piece of imagery that takes the term literally—a cat calling out—using humour and irony to spark conversation and reflection. This was a digital and mixed media piece, so elements of illustration, and collage were combined to create a playful yet thought-provoking composition. The use of bold colour and expressive textures helped amplify the message, inviting viewers to engage with the topic in a light-hearted but meaningful way.
Meaning behind the design.
I used a bold and vibrant pink and yellow colour palette. Pink, often associated with femininity, plays into the way gender is targeted in street harassment, while yellow conveys urgency and draws the viewer’s eye—forcing attention much like catcalling does in real life. The contrast between these two bright colours also reflects the clash between the playful appearance of the artwork and the serious, uncomfortable reality of the issue.
